The iconic first generation iPhone – once the most coveted gadget in the world – is to become obsolete from next month, it has been claimed.

The firm does not provide service parts or service documentation for obsolete products, and they cannot be sent to Apple engineers for repairs.

A document circulating online – believed to be an internal Apple memo – says that the original iPhone will become obsolete on June 11.

It says that Apple is about to reclassify the phone as “vintage” in the US and “obsolete” in the rest of the world.

Due to an anomaly in US consumer law, products with the vintage classification will have spare parts available for the next two years for customers who purchased their iPhone in California.

Original iPhone owners will have to use independent service centres for repairs once the change comes into effect.

The document also appears to show that a number of Mac computers will also become obsolete on the same day.

The first generation iPhone was discontinued in 2008 when it was replaced by the iPhone 3G. It reportedly sold more than 6.1 million units in the year or so before the 3G model came out.
