Do Not Disturb Until Monday: Apple’s iPhone 5 feature will fix itself on January 7

It would appear that Apple is unable to fix a bug on its “Do Not Disturb” function for iOS6.

The feature is designed to allow users to silence the phone for a set period, for example while they sleep or attend a meeting, but since January 1 the feature fails to go back to normal mode at its scheduled end time.

It seems that Apple is unable to fix it but that is not as big a problem as it may first appear because the bug should fix itself on Monday.

Apple said on its support forum:

“After January 1st, 2013, Do Not Disturb mode stays on past its scheduled end time.

“Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off.

“To turn off the scheduling feature, tap Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb and switch Scheduled to Off.
This document will be updated as more information becomes available.”

It seems that the problem may have arisen due to a lack of attention to detail on Apple’s part.

Apple iOS developer Patrick McCarron suggested on Twitter that Apple incorrectly formatted how iOS handled dates which led the software to think that the last week of 2012 was actually January 7.

It is not the first time Apple has had a problem with dates:

  • in March 2011  iPhone 4 clocks went back rather than forward as daylight saving changed
  • also in 2011 a software error stopped alarms from sounding on New Year’s Day and
  • the devices also struggled to adjust to the end of daylight savings time back in November.
